When checking oil...

does everyone stand the quad up vertically like the manual says to get the actual engine oil reading from the eye glass? I thought it was full (when the quad was just sitting regular) but then I read that you are supposed to stand it up vertically to check it. When I did this, the engine oil was less than half way up the eye glass. Just making sure everyone does what the manual says (standing the quad up) before I add the oil. Thanks!

no that is just a misprint measure out the correct amount of oil before you pore it in. if you just change the oil no filter its like 1.15 liters if you change the filter its 1.20 and if you drain the whole system its 1.35 liters.

Well, when it's on the ground and the eye glass is full, when you stand it up it's not even halfway there. Makes me nervous because that means if you're just checking on the ground the quad is being ran low on oil. Also, how do people get the fill bolt off? It's too tight, and the only thing I can think to use is a nickel in the little slot, and then spin it with a wrench.....BUT, it's too tight and I can't get it to budge. Any suggestions?

Flathead screwdriver man. When you tip it on the grab bar oil comes back through the intake breather hose and into the airbox. Why would you check it like that? I have never checked my oil that way and i havent had a single issue since i bought it in 08.

Ya I've had mine new since 09, I've never done it that way. I measure before I put it in. I change mine after every race or after each weekend of leisurely riding. I've never had a single issue. As was said before, oil will drain back into the air box. Contact your local dealership if you need more reassurance, but I doubt they will tell you to do that.

Edit: I use my.chainsaw screwdriver/wrench combo to open mine, its like a flat screwdriver with a T handle.

ya, i have never done it that way eathier...
just make sure its flat on level ground, measure out the correct ammount, and pour it in!
and just use a flat head screwdriver on the oil fill bolt.

Ya mine goes a little above.

I have an '09 and my owners manual says on pg 89 to check the engine oil level with the vehicle level. When I bought mine new, the oil level was at the top or above the window. I stripped the small bolt once when I changed oil, so now I only drain with just the bigger drain bolt, but more often. I fill it with 950 ccs and it's right at the halfway in the window.

If I remember right its 1250 ml = 1250 cc, or 1.25 L with filter change. That's what I put in mine.

The reason I put just 950 in mine is because I don't take the small drain plug out because it's stripped. It's still in there and holds oil. If I would take it out I would drain more oil. I'm planning on putting an insert in there this spring.
So, yeah, if you drain from both plugs, you should replace with 1250cc or ml of oil.

It just seems so scary, lol.

Misprint.... lol...

And here is what I do that makes life real easy....

Liters ~ smiters.... The fill amount for a filter change is supposed to be 1.27 US Quarts.

One quart is 32oz and 0.27 is a little more than 1/4 of a quart... which is 8oz.
That comes up to 1.25 US Quarts, which is plenty close enough since some old oil is going to be up in other places.

So what I do is pour a quart in, then measure out 8oz and pour that in...
Done deal. 40oz.

The engine oil should not be ran long enough to need to "top off".

So... problem solved.

I have used this method every time after the first oil change because the oil level in the sight glass is always fluctuating a great deal. But it is still nice to have so you can verify there is oil in there and how it is looking. Coolest part I think is that it allows you to SEE how your oil is doing... as far as rather or not it foams, or entrains a lot of air bubbles, etc... which are important factors in how well your oil choice can protect your engine.

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum hailing out of kingston jamaica. I sold my 07 vforce and got the '08 450r with maybe 6 hours on it. It struggles to turnover with a new battery but I do not miss the 700 at all.

The oil in the airbox is a very real problem. I found it out the hard way. As it is so much lighter than the 700, I simply stood her up on the grab bar and pushed up to the pickup to load as per couple of videos I have seen on youtube. Holy Kamoly what a mess in the airbox!! The filter disintegrated and it took me 2 hours to clean everything. So from where I sit..... DO NOT DO IT! If there is a way around this, I would love to hear.

you are suppose to run the engine for a minute and then let it sit for a couple of minutes before you look at the view glass. if you look at it while its running you see the oil churring in the engine. once you shut it off it looks completely empty and slowly it settles back to the actual level it is. this is because it is a simi dry pump system.

So I barely got a 2014 model kfx and I did my first oil change (took filter out too) I poured the recommended but when I turned it on it was half way while it was running but when I turned it back off it went over the glass window. Is that how it’s supposed to be or do I need to pour some out of it

@albear85 - it didnt smoke at all. The plug fell off the airbox and after a quick look in the service manual I found where it came from. When I went to put it back on, I saw oil coming from it, and thats when I pulled off the airbox cover. I must admit though, it was tipped for much longer than usual when I came back from the track just to have a look at everything underneath for the first time and did a bit of cleaning etc. It could have been 20 minutes. I am not mechanically inclined so oil going in the airbox was the last thing I was concerned about. I was more concerned about the gas running out. Oh well.

Gas won't come out unless your cap leaks. You can pinch off that breather hose so oil doesn't back drain into your air box if you need to stand it up. I've been intending on going to.the auto parts store to look for a check valve to put in that breather but I haven't gotten to it yet. It's a little low on my list, when I get to it ill post a part number for you guys.
