I've got an 04 TRX450r w/a 480 kit right now and it'll lug, but it's way more top-end happy than those 400's ever were. It's not really that great of a motor for just trail riding.
Yeah, I am just racking my brain on what to do with the old 400.

I've been "gonna sell it" for a dang year and a half now.
That's going just about as well as "I'm gonna trade it in" went a year and a half ago.

I like the danged ol thing... it just don't have enough juice for me.
Yeah... I know that's what the 450 is for... but still.

Otherwise I like it for what it is... but wish I had the newer REVERSE.
That would be nice too.

Thought about picking up an 05+ w/reverse... making one out of two, and parting out or selling one.
Like 416, 426 or 440 on top of a reverse bottom.
And yeah I could just dump it for a KFX/DVX/Z400... I dunno.
Just though about the honda route since I already have all the bolt-ons.

As for the TRX450R... my buddy has one with a lot of work... national woods motor, hand built exhaust, etc... and it will pretty much lug right with my 400EX. It's remarkable compared to my other riding buddies TRX450's.

I am pretty sure it has a flywheel weight and a bunch of additional power as well of course. He says he really doesn't know what all they did to it... and I believe him... and would not blame him if he was lying.

Something like that would make a nice EX replacement also, and I bet many of my bolt-ons might fit too.

Just wanted to ask Jrod to see if he had any insight on things in general since he had several brands set up as a kicker.

And just doing a little thinking out loud for down the road.

duster... im am guessing your buddy's 450r is an 04-05 model... my 08 will do a third gear start from a dead stop and all I have is some head work w/ stock piston and cam... its geared quite a bit lower than the 04-05's they changed the tranny in 06+ models

Which one?... LOL...

Some of them are the '04-'05 models... some are the '06-'09 models.

The one that is built and has kick azz stall resistance is an '08 like yours I believe... Either '08 or '09... can't remember for certain...

Stock it had the '06-'09 nose... red body plastics with the fin vents by the seat... and a black tank... I am thinking '08 because I'm thinking '09 had fender colored tank???

Anyways yeah, it feels just like my 400EX really... grunty and all... just with like twice the power and the gears are not as short... not shift happy like the EX or KFX when accelerating through the gears.

Now if yours is like this... and you just came off the KFX, well then you're the guy who can 'appreciate' what I'm saying here even if you haven't been a 400EX owner.

It's a lot different than the KFX can be... and qualifies as a dang nice REPLACEMENT for my 400EX.

If it's really easy to get an '06+ TRX450 there, this really makes my choice tough on what I'll want to do.

well the 08+ have the tank covers... the black ones would be 04-07. but the one you described w the flat style headlight, red plastic and black tank is an 06-07 (IF stock plastics/tank are on it). w just a little bit of motor work (pipe and airbox lid off) and a quick shot mod on the FCR carb its got what you need... plus all you have to do is cut a green wire coming off the stock CDI and you get 1000 rpm upped on the rev limiter
