Very Bad News

After cleaning my airbox tonight i pulled my air filter for a regular cleaning as well as an oil change. When i got the stock filter element out (still waiting for my fci) i noticed the cage on the inside had dried dirt on it as well as on the screen of the cone. At this point i decided to try and remove the box for further inspection and found that the clamp at the intake tube was completely hanging loos and was never tightened. The restrictive plastic tube was twisted in a way that the intake tube has been breathing unfiltered air and i mean ALOT of it. I think all the mud and puddles i have been going through have been what was causing me to cut out. I thought it was the need for di-electric grease so i greased all my connectors two weekends ago. I also have worries because i spent the weekend riding in the dunes in eastern WA this last weekend. The sand there contains alot of ash from the mountain and my intake just sucked all that shit up. I am so upset i just got this quad and dont know what i should do. Please what should i do???

Fuck i didnt even get to install my Dasa and intake yet

That's some bad luck :/ Might be worth checking if your dealer has a camera they can stick down through the sparkplug hole and check the cylinder wall for scoring. The stock foam filters on these things don't seem to do a good job anyway. Mine and 2 other friends' 450s all had dirt or sand get passed the filter. They've changed to a different foam filter and I just went for the FCI.

i dont get what everyone is talking about. you guys must not be using air filteroil. i oil my stock filter(before i got my current uni) and put it in and it always sealed perfect. i would take it off after 2 or 3 times at the track and it would be coated in dust and mud. after i took the filter off there was NO mud or dust on the screen. or anywherein the intake. just in the box are and thats normal.

so i recomend using airfilter oil . PS wasnt trying to be a dick

I do use filter oil everytime i clean it. I change the oil every ride and clean the filter so my maintenance is above par. The dirt, sand, water, and mud did not make it through the filter it got sucked in through the boot that attaches to the intake tube. The clamp was completely loose and there is about a 1/4 inch gap for everything to just get sucked up inside the engine. Was not due to me not oiling the filter trust me i beleive in preventative maint.

Let me know how the shop treats you. If it were me, I would be wanting a new engine. The sand you have been riding in worries me the most. That stuff gets in everything and scratches the crap out of aluminum.

Just got back from Paulsons and the service guy told me I should be checking all nuts bolts and everything per service manual. The service manual dont tell you to check the clamps for the intake. Sounded like they want to just put it back together and see how it runs. Im very upset right now i had the cash in hand to get the Yamaha or Kawasaki and im thinking i made the wrong choice
