Exclamation Sand in my intake!

I installed a K&N OEM replacement filter with outerwears, and took the airbox lid off(with PC3). It ran like a champ. After I returned from the Oregon dunes i found my whole intake coated in sand, and sand in my throttle body. I have since cleaned it and I've been riding in the dirt. Now there's dirt all in my intake. What problems should I expect???

Sounds pretty typical for K&N. Problem number one is to fix the filtering problem. Probably getting all the way to the cylinder and scoring the walls.

If you're running a properly oiled K&N and a outerwears filter, there's absolutely no reason for shit to be getting past it. (The FCI filter is the same style of filter as a K&N, and no better. K&N didn't make as big of a name for themselves as they did by producing crap) Check your intake connections, something might have come loose. Or oil the fucker, sometimes they don't come adequately oiled from wherever you buy them.

K&N will pass sand and dirt. Use a foam filter. I have used many K&N filters and they flow great but they will NOT filter as good as a foam filter.

Check the very front outside of the box where the intake clamps to the box. The ring that is glued to the box is weak and can have gaps around the box letting dirt/sand get in. If there are any gaps at all talk to the dealer about warranty. As well check all the clamps attaching intake, throttle body, etc. Kawasaki's intake/box is fucking GARBAGE! I walked around the dealer and seen 3 out of 5 quads new on the showroom with gaps at the same location.

My advice is make it all stock, take it in to the dealer for warranty but DO NOT tell them you road in sand or they will reject the warranty. After you get a top end rebuild get ahold of Ken at KB Motorsports (he's a site sponsor) and get a Fuel Customs intake system. That will solve any and all problems.

On a side note I had mine in for warranty 3 weeks after my purchase for the same problem. Kawasaki needs to fire the stupid engineer that thought up the stock intake and recall all quads for an inspection/repair.

Mine has sucked in TONS of dirt, dust, and sand. It still runs like a top. It was also recently swaped and got water all in the motor and oil (I shut it off before it sank and towed it back and pulled the plug before turning it over). I am still running strong but I am just waiting on it to screw up. It took me about 6-8 oil changes to get all the water out. It sucked. I have not done a a compression check but I have not noticed any power loss. My quad also has a ton of hours on it. I am actually very impressed it has not blown up from the abusive I have given it.

I am no longer a fan of K&N filters.

Even with that said though... if properly serviced, it shouldn't let big particles like sand pass. Dust yes... sand no...

I'd say you have an intake leak.

For future reference guys... say what you want, but the only thing K&N flows more of is dust. K&N is ok for street... and where the name brand got built up. But it's not comparable to the other off-road filters for off-road use.

Look guys, I've had it proven to me with a wideband o2 sensor and a few different 400EX filters... field recorded air/fuel on the same 400EX... and the K&N actually flows less than the foam.

I know... I had to have it proven to me too.

From what I now know and what I have seen out of the K&N, I think I have bought my last. I'll stick to No-Toil, Twin Air, UNI... etc...
